More than 100 people gathered outside Fero's Bar & Grill Thursday night to pay their respects to the five people slain there early Wednesday.
While some shared stories and laughs, others broke down on their hands and knees, sobbing uncontrollably.
The victims of a suspected robbery unsuccessfully hidden by arson were bar owner Young Suk Fero of Aurora, 63, Daria M. Pohl, 22, of Denver; Kellene Fallon, 45, of Denver; Ross Richter, 29; and Tereasa Beesley, 45, of Denver.
"This was so senseless, just something you can't even explain," said Sam Smart, a friend of Pohl
Friends and family of the five greeted each other with hugs and handshakes as they dropped off flowers, stuffed animals and pictures of their loved ones.
"I'm just so glad she (Fero) is in heaven now, smiling down on all of us," said Robert Boone, long-time bar patron.
No matter who they were there to honor, most at the vigil agreed the situation came down to "wrong place, wrong time" for all involved.
"This is the worst thing that could ever happen," said Lindsay Moore, friend of Fero. "She was a wonderful woman and very tough."
Those who knew Fero well said she was no-nonsense person, who likely ordered the suspects to leave the bar once the incident unfolded.
Investigators arrested Dexter Bernard Lewis, 22; Joseph Hill, 27; and Lynell Jonathan Hill, 24, on Wednesday night about 11 p.m., Denver police announced Thursday morning.
